Dealing With Burnout
Around this time of year, I always find myself struggling with motivation to complete schoolwork. As the weather gets colder and the sun starts setting earlier, it gets harder to get out of bed and make myself do homework. In the time after winter break, it is often very difficult to keep up with all my work, and I find that the third quarter is often the most rigorous out of the whole year. If you are also balancing a BBYO position at the same time, it’s important to remember to put yourself first. Although your position and your schoolwork are very important, you can’t complete them if you are not in the right mental state to do so.
Here are some tips to keep in mind as you head into some of the hardest months of the year. Although some of these are pretty basic, sometimes we forget about them as we get super busy.
- Go outside
I know the weather isn’t the best right now, but it’s important to still get some fresh air whenever you can. Even a few minutes outside has been proven to boost your mood! Go on walks with friends or by yourself and listen to music as a way to clear your mind.
- Get enough sleep
The CDC suggests 8-10 hours of sleep for teenagers 13-18. Although this often seems unachievable with all the things you have to do in a day, even an extra hour makes the next day so much better. You are happier, healthier, and more motivated!
- Stay organized with to-do lists
I have recently started using a planner as the stress of junior year was getting to be too much. Staying organized is different for everyone. For me, I love writing things on paper and separating them by day, so I don’t feel too overwhelmed looking at every single thing I have to do. It's important to find what works for you in terms of staying on top of your tasks.
- Ask for help
Whether it’s school or BBYO that you are struggling with, it is so important to remember that there are many people who are there for you. Sometimes, just a simple text to a friend or a conversation with a teacher can go a long way in relieving stress.
